William Paterson University’s Annual Summer Jazz Workshop for High School and College Students Returns in Full Swing From July 17 to July 23, 2022

William Paterson University’s 29th annual Summer Jazz Workshop for high school and college students 14 and older will be held from July 17 to July 23, 2022 on the  campus in Wayne, N.J.

An award-winning jazz tradition, the workshop includes six intense and fun-filled days of small jazz group rehearsals, and nightly concerts with world-class artists. Participant instrumentalists or vocalists may be at the beginner, intermediate, or advanced level.  In-depth knowledge of jazz or jazz improvisation is not required.

The program will include classes in jazz improvisation, history, and arranging which culminate in a final performance by participant ensembles with faculty on July 23.

Helen Sung, this year’s Summer Jazz Workshop Artist-In-Residence, is a major force in the jazz world. A 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, Sung has nine albums out as a leader, and she and her band have performed at festivals in Newport, Monterey, and Sydney, and at major venues like SFJAZZ, Disney Hall, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, and Blue Note Beijing. As a sidewoman, she has performed with Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Regina Carter, Terri Lynne Carrington, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and the Mingus Big Band.
