The Department of Secondary and Middle School Education provides opportunities for all students to engage in coursework relevant to their area of specialty and to introduce them to current, innovative, and culturally relevant teaching strategies enabling them to be effective teachers. 

Learn more about each of our programs:

  • BA in Secondary Education K-12 in content areas: Arts, Biological Science, Chemistry, Chinese, Physical Science, Earth Science,
         English, French, Japanese, Math, Social Studies and Spanish (BA in Secondary Education K-12)
    The BA in secondary education K-12 combines academic course work in a specific content area, secondary education, and university core curriculum. Students who complete all program requirements earn a BA in secondary education and will be recommended to the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) for a Certificate of Eligibility for Advanced Standing by the Office of Certification and Education Enrollment in the College of Education.
  • Graduate Certificate: Bilingual Education K-12 (K-12/Bilingual Education)
    Students interested in obtaining the K-12/Bilingual Education certification must complete 12 credits of academic course work in order to be recommended for the K-12/Bilingual Education certification with the credential needed to teach students in two languages.
  • Graduate Certificate: English as a Second Language (K-12/ESL)
    Students interested in obtaining a K-12/ESL certification must complete 15 credits of academic course work to be recommended for the K-12/ESL certification with the credential needed to teach English language learners.
  • Graduate Certificate: Teacher of Students with Disabilities (K-12/TSD)
    Students interested in obtaining a K-12/TSD certification must complete 22 credits of academic course work to be recommended for the K-12/TSD certification with the credential needed to teach students with disabilities.
  • MAT in Secondary Education Subject Field K-12
    Content areas include: Art, Biological Science, Chemistry, Chinese, Earth Science, English, French, Japanese, Music, Physical Science, Social Studies, and Spanish: The MAT K-12 is a 30-credit, 15-month program, in which students earn initial certification and a master of arts in teaching degree in their subject area. The program requires a full-time, year-long residency in area schools. As part of their program, students implement their action research projects during the final (second) summer semester. Students who complete all program requirements will be recommended to the NJDOE for a Certificate of Eligibility for Advanced Standing by the Office of Certification and Education Enrollment in the College of Education.

    For the alternate route, students are required to hold a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) and be full-time teachers of record in a school district. Students receive a year (or 11 months) of mentorship and pursue initial certification and a master of arts in teaching degree in their subject area.
Graduates of the BA in secondary education K-12 and MAT K-12 are well prepared to teach their content area at the middle and high school levels. They will be able to serve as full-time K-12 teachers in any New Jersey school district or states that have a reciprocal agreement with NJDOE Certificate of Eligibility for Advanced Standing.
